Every November, as the air gets crisp and the blaze-orange comes out, I’m reminded of one of my family’s longest-standing traditions: deer camp. Since I was a little girl, my dad has headed up north for deer opener weekend, a ritual that’s been part of my family for generations. For us, deer camp isn’t just about hunting – it’s about connection to family, to the outdoors, and to a shared respect for safety and responsibility around firearms.
Growing up, firearms were always treated with care and purpose. My dad made sure I understood that owning or handling a gun came with serious responsibility. Those early lessons about safety and respect have stayed with me, and they now influence my work as an attorney helping clients navigate firearm ownership through gun trusts.
Now, in my practice at Schromen Law, I assist clients with establishing gun trusts to ensure firearms are transferred properly and lawfully – both during life and after death. These trusts help families maintain compliance with federal and state firearm laws, prevent unintentional violations, and preserve treasured family heirlooms or hunting traditions for the next generation. Whether it’s a single hunting rifle or an extensive collection, a well-drafted gun trust provides clarity and legal protection for everyone involved.
For many Minnesotans, responsible firearm ownership is part of their heritage, woven into family and community life. Helping clients honor that tradition safely and legally feels like a natural extension of my own upbringing. It’s rewarding to combine my legal expertise with an understanding of the personal and cultural significance these items carry – especially when I think about my dad’s own collection and the legacy it represents.
At Schromen Law, we believe that responsible gun ownership extends beyond safe handling – it also means planning for how those firearms will be transferred thoughtfully and lawfully when the time comes. Establishing a gun trust ensures that your firearms are managed and passed down in a way that protects your loved ones and honors your family’s traditions in a way that aligns with both safety and the law.
