We have all experienced some form of trauma keeping us from optimally moving forward in life. These experiences can be anything from loss and illness to physical or sexual abuse.

Trauma takes an essential part of us, so we may not feel whole. Many times a part of our spirit/soul leaves our body, and the trauma takes its place. Often people aren’t ready to heal until they have some distance from the difficult event(s) in their lives. Once we’re ready to heal the past, we can ask the universal energies to come in to help us let it go, which then leaves room for our soul to come in to take its place. Shamans would call this a soul retrieval.

A soul retrieval creates a permanent positive change mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. If you let go of the past — and don’t replace it with your own spirit/soul —your body will typically take on an energy similar to what you let go of.

Most people heal mentally first, emotionally second, and physically last. Spiritual growth happens all along the way.

Why do we heal in this way? It’s easier on our core self if we heal these aspects of us separately.

We typically remember and understand the trauma mentally first because it’s easier to deal with it if the emotions and body are not engaged in it. If a trauma is severe, we may talk about it like a news report. The mental experience may be disjointed images that pop up without warning or feel like a rumination. Talking about it with someone you trust is helpful. However, over-talking about it may lock it in further, so it’s good to talk about it with the intention of letting it go.

We then heal the trauma emotionally through crying, getting angry, and feeling all the array of emotions we’ve held onto. As you feel your emotions, you are letting them go.

Our body is the last to let go. The body can be afraid of re-experiencing the trauma, so it holds onto it, which keeps the trauma alive within us. It’s a good idea to talk to your body like you would a child: “Body, you’re holding onto an old experience. This is nothing new. Letting it go will help you feel lighter, happier and freer!”

It’s important to get help when there’s a trauma or difficult experiences, but there’s a lot you can do on your own, too.

Below are some spiritual strategies that may help your mind, emotions, and body let go of traumas and difficult experiences.

  1. Acknowledge you have an eternal Higher Self/Spirit that has all the answers for you. Ask your Higher Self/Spirit to oversee your healing process. Practice accessing this wisdom daily through meditation and other spiritual practices that work for you. You can imagine your Higher Self is an older version of you, an ethereal being that looks like your current self, or an angel. Have them talk to you and/or feel the connection, wisdom, and peace from them.
  2. Remember we all had help during traumas from our spirit guides—even if we don’t consciously remember them being there. They can be ancestors or friends on the other side or other advanced beings or angels. Ask them to bring in safety and healing so you can gently release the past. Meditating on your spirit guides is a good way to connect to them.
  3. Look at your ancestry and past lives to see what traumas have occurred. We all repeat the unresolved issues and traumas of our ancestors due to their energetic influence. You can do this intuitively and/or talk to relatives who know the ancestral history or go to someone who can help you. This can make a big difference in how you feel since you are feeling emotions and energies that are not yours, making it easier to work on your current trauma.
  4. Imagine going to the age when the trauma occurred and talk to your younger self. See/feel/know/hear how he/she is doing. If there are people who hurt you, ask to be fully resolved with them. Ask your body to let this experience go as you talk to your younger self. You can ask your younger self to merge with you, if she/he is ready to do so; this is soul retrieval. This means bringing back any parts of your spirit lost due to the trauma. A soul retrieval creates a permanent, positive change.
  5. Reverse affirmations. Your body holds onto old triggering messages due to traumas. To know what they are, journal about whatever comes into your head. This is called “free association.” After doing this, look at what you’ve written. What negative messages are being shown to you? Pick out three and write the exact opposite of the negative messages 20 to 30 times a day until the message feels neutralized. As soon as a negative message is neutralized, add another one to work with.

We all have traumas at some point in our life journey. However, we are Divine Beings having a human experience. We are not our experiences—we can let them go. Healing yourself heals everybody and everything, since we’re all interconnected.
